八国联军进入天津城，滥杀无辜，百姓们流离失所。只有孤身一人卖烧饼的章避火还没来得及逃命，正在烤一炉火烧。突然，院里闯进一个义和团义士，眼看他就要遭洋鬼子枪杀，章避火顺手抄起擀面杖，打死了洋人，救了义士霍青山。义士表示救命之恩来日相报。几天后，硝烟弥漫的小街又有了生机。章避火因将火烧摊摆在"响破天"的爆竹铺前，两人发生争执；一个洋人要买火烧，使章避火受到众人的指责。章避火大怒，大打出手。众人推翻了火烧摊，围观人趁火打劫，爆竹堆被弄进了火星，小街一片混乱。夹杂在人群中的霍青山顺手拿了几个火烧走了。夜里，几个洋鬼子闯进了妓院，当洋鬼子企图侮辱小翠时，突然一个黑影甩出一个暗器，砍死洋鬼子。众人赶到出事现场，从洋鬼子颈部取出一个鲜血染红的烧饼。大家仔细观看，竟发现烧饼出自章避火之手！众人来到章避火窗外，看到章避火烙烧饼的绝技，只见他将烙好的火烧，一个个铲出，头...。The subtitle of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet’s first feature, from 1965, “Only Violence Helps Where Violence Reigns,” suggests the fierce political program evoked by their rigorous aesthetic. The pretext of the film, set in Cologne, is Heinrich Böll’s novel “Billiards at Half Past Nine,” which they strip down to a handful of stark events and film with a confrontational angularity akin to Bartók’s music that adorns the soundtrack. The subtlest of cues accompany the story’s complex flashbacks. The middle-aged Robert Fähmel tells a young hotel bellhop of persecutions under the Third Reich| his elderly father, Heinrich, an architect famed for a local abbey, recalls the militarism of the First World War, when his wife, Johanna, incurred trouble for insulting the Kaiser. A third-generation Fähmel is considering architecture, just as the exiled brother of Robert’s late wife, returns, only to be met by their former torturer, now a West German official taking part in a celebratory parade of war veterans. Straub and Huillet make the layers of history live in the present tense, which they judge severely. The tamped-down acting and the spare, tense visual rhetoric suggest a state of moral crisis as well as the response—as much in style as in substance—that it demands.。
