故事围绕旧金山最后一个，也是即将消失的黑人社区展开。一个黑人男子(吉米·凡尔斯饰)和他的朋友(乔纳森·梅杰斯饰)为找回属于家族的归属感，他们决定买下属于自己家族的房子。。因为总是被地方长官的儿子欺负，乔从家里跑了出来，以打架谋生。在被资助他比赛的人背叛之后，乔开始到各个地方游走并学习泰拳和剑术。在旅途中，乔偶然救下了达信王族的成员，并和其中一位名叫兰姆的女子结下了深厚的感情。分别时，他们依依不舍，约定将来有一天一定会重逢。后来，乔因为英勇善战得到达信王的赏识，加入了他的军队。在这里，他还遇到了兰姆的叔叔……。The woman at the other end of Sam's marriage proposal over the telephone is Diane.
